January 13

Let me start by saying a great big THANK YOU to all the parents that helped make our Christmas Party a huge success!!!  I am so thankful for each and everyone of you and feel so blessed to be a small part of your lives.  It was so nice to just get to play with them and have fun with them.

The spelling words we will be working on and testing on next Tuesday are: many, out, she, them, then, some, these, so, would, other.

Our main focus this week in phonics is compound words.  Your child should be very familiar with Nouns, Adjectives, and somewhat on Verbs.  While we are reading, we are having discussions on settings, characters, problems. and solutions.  We have always discussed this but we are really concentrating on it and how it would change the story if you took a character out, what if the problem changed, etc…  In Guided Reading we are having a little fun with some Reader’s Theaters that the students will put on for other classes towards the end of this week.

Math we are focusing on number patterns.  How to start counting forwards and backwards from any number I give them.  Your child should have a very good understanding of addition and subtraction at this point.  These concepts are ongoing throughout First Grade and get harder as the year progresses.  Instead of 2 addends there will be 3 and the numbers get higher such as 2 digit addition.

In Social Studies we are learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and researching his life.

Once again, thank you so much for your support in reading with the kiddos every night.  I am trying to send Math Homework home every Tuesday until the end of school so you get a good idea of how you child is understanding the concepts we are teaching.
