First Week of First Grade

I am so excited to begin a new year with your sweet Firstie!  We try to take it kinda slow the first week but still let then know what First Grade is all about.  Today we introduced a station, the first 5 sight words, the math stations and writing.  We will focus on each of these things all week long.  I am loving my new Firstie group!!!!

End of year

First of all, let me thank each and every one of you for letting me be a part of your babies journey.  I love your kiddos as if they were my own and LOVE each and every milestone we get to cross together.  Your sweeties have worked so hard this year and have come so far!  Please take advantage of the amazing program that the Longview library is offering this summer to keep your kiddos going.  I have also sent home a sight word book for them to work on.  My heart is so sad that tomorrow is our last day together but it’s also so full knowing that they are truly ready for 2nd grade.  I’m not done with your sweeties as I follow them and there progress for years to come!

Now, I’m going to leave this right here.  Please let me know if you’d like a copy!  I love you guys so much!!!!  Grow on my sweet Firsties grow on!

Last 2 weeks of school

WHAT????  I can’t believe this year is almost over.  These kiddos have grown so much and are sooooo amazing!  I want to thank each and everyone of you for the Teacher Appreciation gifts last week.  Y’all went above and beyond to make me feel special and it worked!!!

This week we will learn about inventors and learn that we can become inventors too.  This week is always such and eye opener for me as to what they can come up with and create.  I am asking y’all to send anything random you can think of.  Toilet paper or paper towel empty rolls, balloons, foil, string, shoe or cereal boxes, etc…  If they come home and say I need…it’s true! (haha)  I am also in need of empty water bottles, cooking oil, and alka-seltzer tablets. (we are making “lava lamps”)  If you can help out with any of these things I would greatly appreciate it and so would these sweeties.

We will also finish up our study on clouds and do an experiment with that!

Next Monday is our last full day of First Grade:( Tuesday and Wednesday are half days for the kiddos.  I am soooo going to miss this amazing group of Firsties.  They have such awesome hearts and have grown to be such good friends.  I love each and everyone of them!!!!

Read-a-Thon

Well…I told y’all I’d forget something.  The Read-a-Thon is a great fundraiser for our littles.  It is our way of earning a little money by making them feel that they are making a big difference by doing what they love.  You all got a sheet of paper Friday with your students code to log in.  When you sign them up they get to choose a free prize which always makes their day.  From there, you can share on FB, Twitter, etc…, people can then click on your kiddos picture (that you share) and donate to their Read-a-Thon.  The more money each child earns for their reading the more prizes they will be able to pick.  I will log a reading session each day here at school and you can log additional reading sessions at home.  The kids really get so proud of how much they read that it makes them want to read more!  This is the only fundraiser White Oak Primary does and it really benefits us greatly!!!  Please take the time to sign your student up and help them make a difference for our school by reading.

Thank you for all you do each and every day!!!!

Week of April 30th

WOW!!!!  That’s all I can say is WOW!  This year is flying by.  I can’t believe we are almost to May.  Your kiddos have been working so hard.  I feel so blessed each day to be a small part of their lives.  We have a lot going on over the next few weeks.  I am going to try my best to mention it all but I feel like I’m going to forget something.

Wednesday of this week, May 2nd, we will be having class pictures taken.  The cost is $10.00 for an 8×10 and 5×7 funny shot.  This is a great keep sake for them and you.  We will be sending an envelope home today for you to send back with your kiddo.  You have until this Friday to order.

We are having our final spelling test tomorrow on the following words: way, find, water, may, use, long, little, very, after, words

Math:  We have been working on double digit addition and subtraction without regrouping, three addends, and 3 dimensional shapes.  This week we will  work on fractions, 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4.  We will also work on expanded notation.

Phonics:  We are just reviewing a lot of things throughout the year that seem to be giving us a little trouble in our writing like sneaky “e” at the end of words, vowel combinations (ay, oi, oy, etc…), and those blends.

Writing:  Our focus is still on beginning-middle-end of stories.  We are really struggling with getting those details in our stories.  I have hit punctuation pretty hard with them so hopefully that’s starting to show up.  Using capitals in the right places and when writing I.  We are starting to get there I think.  You will see another graded writing sample come home sometime this week.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to call me!

Zoo Trip

I sent a note home today with a few little notes to help our day go smoothly tomorrow.  I made mention that the zoo is not allowing outside food for parents.  Today Kindergarten went and said that they had no issue with parents bringing lunches in backpacks.  I will leave that up to your discretion!!!  Kindergarten also had some trouble with parents getting through the gates because there were so many schools there.  I’m not sure how many schools will be there tomorrow but it took some parents over an hour to get through.  You may want to leave ahead of us to get your ticket or order your ticket online if you plan on going with your Firstie.  The admission is free for your child so no need to send money, but if you would like for your kiddo to feed the birds ($1.00) or feed the ducks ($.50) you may want to send them with a little.  Please do not feel obligated as I want this to be a stress free, fun trip!  Please feel free to text or email me with any questions.  I can’t wait to spend a fun day with these kiddos!!!!

Zoo Field Trip

Just a reminder that we will be going to the zoo this Wednesday.  Please make sure your kiddo is in comfortable shoes and is wearing a White Oak shirt (if you have one).  To help make the morning flow smoothly, please put your child’s name on his/her lunch and drinks.  I put the drinks in a cooler so they are cold when they go to lunch.  I will be separating the drinks from the lunch.  Remember if you are going, your kiddo still has to ride the bus to the zoo but can ride home with you afterwards.  I will have a sign out sheet with me.  I can’t wait to have some fun with these sweeties!!!

Week of April 2

Hey guys!!!!  Hope everyone had a fantastic Easter with family and friends.  I can’t believe we are down to our last weeks of school.  This year has FLOWN by!  Your kiddos are doing so great.  I am so proud of them!

A few notes before we move on to what we are learning about.  Your student should have brought home a note today for our field trip next Wednesday.  I need this form back as soon as possible.  This note will serve as their permission slip to go and let us know how many lunches might be needed from the cafeteria.  If I do not get this form back, they will not be allowed to go.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.  The first round of STAAR testing will begin next Tuesday and Wednesday (this is why we are vacating the building on Wednesday) so you will be unable to eat with your kiddo on Tuesday.  We have to keep it as quiet as possible for our upstairs friends.

Spelling:  We will have a spelling test tomorrow on the following words:  no, make, than, first, been, its, who, now, people my

Math:  Please continue to work with your kiddos on time and counting a collection of coins!!!  We are really focusing on number patterns (skip counting) by 2’s, 4’s, 5’s, and 10’s.  We are also starting double digit addition without re-grouping.

Writing:  Our big focus is on, as it has been, making sure our stories have a beginning-middle-end and that we use our imagination.  We will chart what gets a capital letter and what punctuation person I need to use. We have talked about these things all year but I will be holding them accountable for these in the last 9 weeks.  I have really had a hard time this year getting these sweeties to just use their imagination and write, so the mechanics (punctuation, talking marks, commas, etc..) have not been too much of a focus for us.

Science/Social Studies:  We are learning about the amazing state of Texas over the next two weeks.  We will learn the capital, regions, state symbols, where things can be located, and neighboring states.

Frog and Toad Play

Just a quick reminder that our Frog and Toad play is in the morning, March 8th, at 9:00.  The kiddos should wear jeans and a black shirt.  If you do not have a black shirt just choose a dark colored shirt for them.  Can’t wait to see all of you there.  You may take your student with you after the play if you wish.

Spring Break is coming up next week!!!!  I think we are all ready for a little family time and a break.  Spring pictures will be the week we come back from Spring Break.

Our Easter Party will be March 30th at 11::30.  If I have any parent that would like to take charge of this party please let me know.  It will be pretty simple because we hunt eggs outside then play a few relay games so the only thing would be organizing food, drinks, and maybe a quick craft.  I’d love to have a cute picture frame or something.

One more thing, sorry for the overload.  We will be taking a field trip to the zoo April 11th.  I will need a few parents to volunteer to go and help with a few students while there. Please let me know if you are interested in this fun adventure!!!  You have to of had the background check to help with a group of students so if you are interested and have not gone through the volunteer paperwork let me know and I’ll get it to you.  You do not have to have the background check if you are just coming to be with your student but in order for me to let other students walk around with you, you do have to have it.
